Q&A

Here are some questions we are asked frequently and answers to them. Feel free to contact us with any question not covered here.

Where is all this food sourced?

Pastured pork and grass fed beef come from Kenneth Yoder, Melvin Miller and Driftless Area Co-Op, as needed. Chickens are raised by Ada Yoder. Baking is done by Erma Miller and Ada Yoder. Eggs come from Melvin Miller and Tom Zsurzs. Produce will come from local Amish farms.

Is pastured meat tasty?

It’s not just tasty. It has very high quality. The animals it comes from are raised in their natural habitat. They eat their choice of pasture diet, while having access to clean drinking water. And they are quite happy because of it.

For the perspective, meat you are used to buying in grocery stores is produced in CAFO’s. which are food factories. Through selective breeding and using very specific feeding regimen involving GMO feeds and also disease prevention involving vaccinations, hormones and antibiotics (which these animals need, because they are raised in filth, no access to pasture and being stuffed with artificial feeds), meat coming from these factories is extremely lean and unnatural. This is done purely to maximize the profits of food corporations based on amounts of meat they manufacture.

Are these products inspected?

Pork and Beef are proecssed at the State licensed and inspected facility, Integrity Meats. Chickens are sold by private Amish farm and are labeled as “not inspected”. All meat is  sold and delivered frozen only. Eggs are sold by farmers that have less than 150 chickens and don’t require inspection. Baked goods are sold as home-baked products. Fresh produce doesn’t require license.

is pastured meat lean?

Please don’t expect very lean cuts. Meat like that doesn’t naturally exist in our climate, unless the animal is sick.

Pastured meats have natural level of fat content. For example, an average pork chop has finger-thick fatty border around it. Most cuts have some nice marbling on them. In nature, hogs eat their preferred mix of pasture plants, roots, acorns, nuts, etc. They fatten up to healthy levels, to prepare for the winter. Now, thanks to that fat, after you cook your pork chop or ham, it will have an amazing flavor, with minimal use of spices. And it’s similar with steers and chickens. Not having GMO corn in their diets is quite important too.

Are pastured meats good for environment?

Our pastured pork and grass fed beef are raised on traditional, diversified Amish farms that don’t use herbicides, pesticides or GMO plants. Amish farmers use little to none fossil fuels. Hogs and steers are handled humanely at all stages of their lives. They are not exposed to antibiotics, grow hormones, steroids or GMO feeds. The path from the farmer to butcher shop to your table is extremely short, to assure not only freshness of the meat, but also to limit the carbon footprint – no warehousing is involved and there is very limited transportation.
